A closer look at the chromosphere in hydrogen-alpha. A sunspot group sits inside a bright active region of plage, and a long dark filament (a ribbon of cooler plasma held up by magnetic fields) curves down across the disk below it. A second patch of plage lies near the lower limb. The camera is monochrome, so the orange color is added in processing.
