Our own galaxy seen edge-on from the inside: the bright center is the direction of the galactic core in Sagittarius, about 26,000 light-years away, crossed by dark lanes of dust. The main image zooms in on two of the star-forming regions along the band, the Eagle (M16) and Omega (M17) Nebulae.
